UNDERSTANDING and The Optimized Mind

Episode #1: Understanding Karma

As part of my UNDERSTANDING series, I have been sitting down with Dr. Kate Lund to discuss each topic on her podcast: The Optimized Mind. Since 2022, Dr. Kate has been interviewing experts and sharing insights into ways to help you overcome challenges and create opportunities in your own life, from building leadership to cultivating happiness, and so much more. It seemed only natural to take a deeper dive together as we talk about each volume in the UNDERSTANDING series.

This week, we focus on the first book: Understanding Karma, and you can listen to the full podcast at any of the regular sites, including: Spotify, Apple, and Amazon. (Don’t forget to check out Dr. Kate’s podcast—with so many interesting topics, you’re sure to find something perfect for your situation.) Thanks for listening!

If you’re interested in reading more about Karma or gaining a better understanding of complex emotions and issues, check out my UNDERSTANDING series here. If you want to support local bookstores, my books are also on Bookshop.

And a big thank you to Dr. Kate for being such a gracious and engaged host; it’s always a pleasure chatting with you!

Karma and The Golden Rule: An Excerpt from UNDERSTANDING KARMA

Though it seems to be universally understood and applied across multiple religions, practices, and beliefs, Karma can be looked at through different lenses, including both the physicality of life and lifetimes and the more intangible aspect of thought. These variables serve to provide parameters and understanding in karma’s application, but it doesn’t change the underlying rule, which ultimately is about action.

Some variation of The Golden Rule can be found in virtually every belief system on the planet practiced by humans. For many, it provides a moral compass that has its basis in an ethical understanding that we are all connected and part of something greater, whether that’s society, the species, or the planet as a whole. The rule is set forth as a guiding principle of behavior that invites the individual to consider the consequences of their actions before they are undertaken.

The best analogy to understand Karma and how it works is the boomerang! In short, the concept is simple: Whatever you put out will ultimately come back to you...eventually. For karma, the most important words in that statement are: “ultimately” and “eventually.”
