Let’s start with a simple life tip: Don’t read the comments.
We all sort of already know this, don’t we? On social media, the comments can be incredibly fascinating, funny, and engaging. They can also be genuinely horrible. Unfortunately, in a lot of instances, the horrible has outweighed the good. Not all, of course. For example, at least on the posts I’ve chosen to explore, the recent season of Bridgerton has led to a huge amount of love and support for the primary actors Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton. They truly did an amazing job showing the depth and breadth of each of their characters, and it seems like most people would agree… or it’s possible I just find myself in the friendlier areas of the fandom.
I think, however, most people would say that it’s never a good idea to read the comments—especially if you’re a more sensitive being.
Why do we do this? As humans, why do some of us feel compelled to tear others down while others feel the opposite and want to lift people up? Is it just the material, or are there other patterns at play? And does the reason matter?
Being human means experiencing the spectrum of life from the mundane to the extraordinary. It also means experiencing and expressing life from the exceptionally awful to the exceedingly loving. In the comment section, humans are being humans. They are representing the vast diversity of thought, emotion, and experience we are all capable of.
The question, then, becomes simple: What Type of Person Do You Want to Be?
Here are more questions for your consideration:
On the spectrum of life, where do you want to land?
Do you want to be someone who tears others down?
Or do you want to be someone who lifts others up?
Do you want to contribute to the bad feelings and experiences in the world?
Or do you, perhaps, want to help make the world a better place?
Even if it’s only for a few seconds in a comment section on social media, you get to choose how you want to show up, what type of person you want to be. It’s always a choice that you get to decide.
