Tips & Quips—QUIP: You Are Special
You are special. Did you know? In fact, everyone in their own way is special.
Being special is one thing, but we also like to feel special.
Unfortunately, in today’s ‘hustle and grind’ aspirational culture, we rarely feel it. As such, I’d go so far as to say that we chase it like a drug. We need that blended hit of dopamine and serotonin to feel like we matter. So, how do we ensure that we feel special, even if we struggle to believe that we are special?
Right now, there are people in your world and things you do that make you feel special without having to chase it.
Your child, perhaps, or your pet makes you feel like you’re the most wonderful person in the room. Or your best friend, or possibly your mentor, can also make you feel special. Unique, one-of-a-kind. Perhaps playing music, participating in a sport, or dancing gives you the same feeling. Or maybe painting, writing, or cooking does it for you.
The bottom line is: If you’re feeling lesser-than, try stopping the chase. Turn the volume down on social media and other culturally-derived aspirations, and turn the volume up on those individuals, situations, and activities that make you feel more like yourself—more like the wonderful human you are. Do more of those things, and you will start to feel it.
