Grief is a topic that everyone will need to address at some point in their lives. It’s a common experience that is experienced individually. It both invites us into a new way of understanding life, while simultaneously thrusting us into changes we often don’t want. It is the “push-me/pull-you” of all emotions, both causing despair in the midst of loss, while also reminding us of the depth of love or the promise of hope.
When we truly understand grief for what it is, life can somehow become easier, even though it was hardship that brought us to this point. In that way, grief is a great teacher, and just like all teachers, it brings us lessons we may feel unprepared to learn… or are unwilling to learn.
However, when we allow ourselves to pause and become open to grief, we can find a peace that we previously didn’t think possible. To understand this better, we have to break it down and truly get to the heart of what it is, what it does, and how we can move through it. This is the irony of grief: It is both a torment and a blessing.
