Grief is something we all experience. Though it can come in numerous forms, there is no escaping it. If you are human, at some point in your life, you will experience loss. If you experience loss, you will experience grief. It really is that simple.
So, what is grief, actually, and why is it important for us to 1) understand it better, and 2) talk about it more?
In its briefest explanation, grief is the emotion we experience when we undergo loss. The loss can be almost anything, from physical loss like losing a home or a cherished possession, to emotional loss, such as losing an opportunity at work. However, the most common form of loss is one that combines the two: Losing someone that we cared for or loved. This is a physical and emotional loss.
What’s important to know is that all loss (regardless of its type) triggers grief. This is why grief is universal. Everyone can relate to loss on some level. What makes grief unique, however, is the nuance we bring to each specific situation. How we experience, express, and understand grief can vary from one person to another, even in the same situation. Being able to allow for a multitude of realities to be true at the same time is a cornerstone of truly understanding grief. When we understand grief, we are better able to sit with others in grief as well as navigate our own journeys with grief.
Grief is one of the most common experiences we will ever share, and yet, it will also most likely be the most personal. Understanding Grief can help you gain a better perspective and more clarity in trying to answer the question: What does it really mean to grieve?
